Discrimination In Hiring?

According to the "2007 Graduating Student Survey" conducted recently by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), white males had an easier time finding full-time positions upon graduation than female and minority graduates. Although there were no gender- or ethnicity-based differences in the percentage of students actively pursuing full-time positions, those factors did play a big role in which graduates landed jobs following graduation.

More than 56 percent of male graduates applying for jobs had secured full-time positions before they graduated; by comparison, only 48 percent of female graduates who had applied for positions had jobs after graduation.

Overall, 53 percent of white/Caucasian-American graduates who had formally applied for full-time jobs had landed positions compared with 34 percent of African-American graduating applicants, and 43 percent of Hispanic-American graduating applicants. Asian-American graduating applicants tended to land full-time jobs at nearly the same rate (52 percent) as their Caucasian peers.

Do the differences reflect discrimination or something else? Looking at gender differences, NACE's study found that males were more likely than females to leverage the resources of their campus career centers. Consequently, they had more job offers.

Yet, a combination of factors appears to cause the ethnic differences. For example, like females, Hispanic applicants (male and female) used their career centers at a lower rate than white applicants and received fewer jobs.

However, African-American males used their career centers and received job offers at the same rate as white males, but accepted job offers at a lower rate. Asian-American males used the career center and received and accepted jobs offers at the same rates as white males.

These results demonstrate that using campus career centers' resources can mean the difference between having a firm job offer following graduation versus having to continue to search. And we believe these results have clear implications for career centers' outreach as well.

What isn’t detailed are the differences between young people studying business versus liberal arts. Are employers taking advantage of the broad backgrounds of liberal arts graduates or taking the easy way out and hiring those with business backgrounds, thinking that they are better prepared?

Who would make ideal Associates from the recent college grads????

Consumer Confidence At Six-year High ...

The Conference Board consumer confidence index rose to a six-year high in July, going to 112.6 from 105.3 in June.

Consumers claiming conditions are "good" rose to 28.1% in July from 27.3% in June. As far as the job market, those claiming jobs are "plentiful" rose to 30.5% from 27.6% in June. And those saying jobs are "hard to get" fell to 18.4% from 20.5%.

"Looking ahead, consumers are more upbeat about short-term economic prospects, mainly the result of a decline in the number of pessimists, not an increase in the number of optimists," said Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board consumer research center. "This rebound in confidence suggests economic activity may gather a little momentum in the coming months."
The consumer confidence survey is based on a sample of 5,000 U.S. households.

Survey Finds Employment Growth Rebounds ...

Employment growth rebounded in the second quarter of 2007 from the first quarter, according to the National Association for Business Economics' industry survey of its members. The report's net rising index for employment was 18 for the second quarter, up from 11 in the first quarter. Thirty-two percent of survey respondents reported employment growth in the second quarter, while 14% reported falling employment.

Forty-one percent said employment will increase in the next six months, compared to 29% in the first-quarter report.

Also, 42% reported that wages and salaries rose in the second quarter. In addition, 40% reported skilled labor shortages.

"The July NABE industry survey showed a pickup in business activity, profit margins, hiring and capital spending compared to the first quarter," said Ken Simonson, chief economist of Associated General Contractors of America. "Expectations also brightened for the next few quarters for the economy as a whole and for employment and capital spending, especially on structures."

The NABE survey included responses from 109 of the organization's members.

Everyone Profits!

With StaffingForce, opportunities are truly available to everyone. We’re the bright future of the recruiting, career manament, staffing, and outsourcing industry. What prompts us to make such a bold claim? The answer is that we’ve developed an open and collaborative model that’s in stark contrast to “closed” staffing industry models. If you’re not familiar with the difference, here’s a comparison from the computer field to help you out. Microsoft has a closed, proprietary operating system. You’re stuck with it and its inefficiencies and can’t change or improve it. Linux, on the other hand, is a free and open computer operating system. It was developed in reaction to Microsoft’s restrictions. More than that, it was and is a collaborative effort. Contributors constantly work to improve Linux so it’s always up-to-date and far ahead of Microsoft’s operating system in terms of price, efficiency, and breadth of use.

So, think of StaffingForce as the Linux of the staffing industry--always up-to-date, constantly improving, and ever ahead of competitors in our field! In fact, we’re better than Linux in two respects. One, with our system, Associates not only contribute knowledge; they can also earn excellent money from their contributions! Second, you don’t need the great knowledge a Linux programmer would need. It doesn’t matter if you have no past recruiting or staffing industry experience. It doesn’t matter if you want to work part-time or full-time. All that matters is your personal initiative and dedication to meeting StaffingForce’s central goal--archiving the world’s information on firms and people in order to empower our Associates with the intelligence necessary to serve our members and the business community in the most effective and efficient way possible. Oh, and along the way, you can earn more than anyone else in the staffing industry! Six figures or more is possible and has been done--repeatedly! Unemployment Claims Drop 12,000 ...

In the week ended July 7, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 308,000, a decrease of 12,000, or 3.8%, from the previous week's revised figure of 320,000, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The four-week moving average was 317,750, a decrease of 1,500 from the previous week's revised average of 319,250.

Unemployment Rate Definition ...

Percentage of employable people actively seeking work, out of the total number of employable people; determined in a monthly survey by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (website: http://www.bls.gov/).

An unemployment rate of about 4% - 6% is considered "healthy". Lower rates are seen as inflationary due to the upward pressure on salaries; higher rates threaten a decrease in consumer spending.

4th of July – Celebrate

Why are we still celebrating?

First of all, we celebrate our choice of freedom over autocracy and subjectivity. We celebrate all employees of the past that have agreed that democracy was worth changing jobs for. We celebrate that as individuals we have rights that no one employer can take away. And we celebrate the freedom of the workforce to work this week for what ever employer we believe in.
We celebrate the freedom to have a career and make whatever money our energy, health, and abilities will allow.

We celebrate hard-work and everyone that thrives on teamwork and is motivated by sharing in the responsibilities of ownership.

We celebrate self-directed training and all improvements that create the best prepared most competence in the marketplace.

We celebrate on providing a secure career opportunity (not just a job) with unlimited growth potential where each colleague controls their own promotion.

We celebrate performance by sharing profit where everybody has the opportunity to fulfill their dreams.

We celebrate participatory leadership in a team culture that strives for excellence.

We celebrate the freedom to pack our friends or family into a car and drive across the country without asking anyone when or if. We celebrate the freedom to buy the best food and medicine science has provided.

But in addition to this celebration of choices, let’s also remember that we celebrate the freedom to change. To become all we that we can be. To improve the condition of ourselves, our candidates, our clients, our company, our investors and people the world over.

In our less-than-perfect world, we can change our skills and lot in life through education.
We can change our environment with your input.

We can change our health problems with research and cures. We can change our cities through compassion and involvement.

Yes, we may disagree about how to go about all the changes. Nevertheless, we are free to choose and change. To enjoy what we have now and grow to what we can become as community. We celebrate freedom to choose and change. We are one body and one spirit against anyone that threatens to take this independence away.

We are one -Asian, white, brown. We are Protestants, Jews, and Catholics. We have Irish blood, Mexican blood, and German blood. We make our home in the West and in the Southwest. We are liberal and conservative, experienced and just getting started.

But one thing we have in common. We are -one body and one spirit for freedom and objectivity. For choice and change, against restriction and stagnation.

Let’s celebrate God’s blessings. Let’s celebrate the choice that we all have made to create something bigger than ourselves. Let’s celebrate the sacrifice that we all have made. Let’s celebrate our resolve to improve that which is not perfect.

Let’s celebrate the hopes that everyone around the world can choose and change.

Let’s enjoy ourselves today. We are united!
