U.S. Staffing Industry Will Grow Faster And Add More New Jobs Over The Next Decade Than Just About Any Other Industry :)

The U.S. staffing industry will grow faster and add more new jobs over the next decade than just about any other industry, according to BLS estimates. In its most recent projections, BLS says that the employment services industry-which is primarily staffing-will grow at an average annual rate of 3.8% from 2004 to 2014, adding nearly 1.6 million new jobs. On the agency's list of the top 10 detailed industries expected to have the largest job growth, employment services ranks first in terms of number of jobs and third in terms of growth rate.

"The catalyst for [the employment services] industry's growth will be increases in the demand for temporary staffing services as flexible work arrangements and schedules continue to proliferate and businesses make their staffing patterns more responsive to market changes," wrote BLS economist Jay M. Berman in the November 2005 Monthly Labor Review.(40) Employment in office and administrative support occupations is expected to grow more slowly than overall employment, in part because of "the greater use that organizations make of temporary workers employed by the employment services industry." In the industrial sector, BLS projects growth in construction jobs will offset a decline in manufacturing employment.

"One-eighth of the new jobs [in construction]-and the fastest growth-is expected to be in the employment services industry." While BLS estimates that manufacturing jobs will decline by more than 750,000 jobs, which is one-quarter the rate of the previous decade, Berman notes nonetheless that production "employment is projected to grow by nearly a quarter of a million in the employment services industry, which provides employees to other industries on a contract or fee basis." As for other sectors, Berman says, "Nearly 25% of all new jobs will be in the professional, scientific, and technical services sector, which includes management, scientific, and technical consulting; and accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping, and payroll services." About 20% of new jobs are expected to be in health care.

Other leading growth sectors include education (especially at colleges) and government (mostly local). Berman also noted that "Legislation and court rulings setting standards in occupational safety and health, equal employment opportunity, wages, health care, pensions, and family leave will increase demand for employment, recruitment, and placement specialists." Because staffing professionals are already well-versed in employment law-and ASA members are kept abreast of new developments-organizations can turn to staffing companies to access specialists with that expertise. Among the 10 major occupational groups tracked by BLS, employment in the two largest in 2004-professional and related occupations and service occupations-will increase the fastest and add the most jobs through 2014.

Just these two groups are expected to account for almost 60% of the total job growth in that period, said Norman C. Saunders, the BLS economist who oversees the agency's projections.(41) But the two groups, he noted, are also on opposite ends of the educational attainment and earnings spectrum. It's important to consider the key assumptions BLS made in developing these projections: the economy will continue to grow at a strong pace, though a little slower; inflation will be restrained; productivity growth will moderate closer to historical norms; the unemployment rate will remain steady at about 5%; and both the U.S. population and work force will grow at an annual rate of 1%.

These assumptions are important because their indicators were headed in this direction when Ben Bernanke's "Goldilocks" op-ed ran last summer, and it's where the economy was headed in the first quarter of this year, when Harris Nesbitt's Jeff Silber glowed about Goldilocks too. Moderating employment growth in the staffing industry "may actually be a good thing," Silber says, because it suggests overall employment growth may slow, which would "temper unemployment rates and keep labor markets from getting too tight." While a falling unemployment rate may boost demand for staffing and recruiting services, when it falls below 4.5%, he says, the labor market becomes too tight and growth of the staffing industry is constrained by lack of supply.

To be sure, ASA data show that the staffing industry employment growth rate dropped from double digits in 1997 to the low single digits in 1998(43) when, BLS data show, the U.S. unemployment rate fell into the 4.3% to 4.6% range. Assuming GDP of mid- to low 3% and an unemployment rate of 5%, Silber is projecting temporary staffing employment growth of 4% to 6% and revenue growth of 7% to 9% in 2006. Staffing Industry Analysts Inc. estimates that temporary help revenues will grow 9% in 2006, and search and placement revenues will grow 22%. These growth rates are slightly lower than 2005's.

But they are more than double the expected rate of overall economic growth. Goldilocks economy or not, what worries America's staffing professionals most is finding qualified employees to meet their customers' needs. Both already see skill shortages. This poses clear challenges-but also exciting opportunities-for an industry that specializes in finding the best talent for businesses.

Great Associate Tools ...

Jigsaw

WEB SITE:
www.jigsaw.com
PRICE: Free to $25 per month per user
GREAT FOR: Sourcing names and current contact details

To get access to Jigsaw's online directory with more than 6.5 million contacts from over 500 thousand companies, recruiters can either pay a monthly subscription fee or earn points by contributing the business card contact details of 25 new people each month.

Jigsaw is a great way to quickly pinpoint and source candidate contact information and identify prospective clients. Recruiters search for business contact information by name, title, company, location, department, industry, employee size or revenue.

The content is community-generated by Jigsaw's 300k registered users so it crosses all industries and includes people at all levels of the organization. Contact details are more likely to be up to date than other people databases because users earn access to free contact information for correcting bad data. With other people search tools users weed through a lifetime of contact information to find the most current data. Jigsaw provides access to only the most current direct contact details.

JobThread

WEB SITE:
www.jobthread.com
PRICE: Free to $749 per job posted
GREAT FOR: Getting jobs in front of passive candidates

Let me just start with saying JobThread is truly cool — a free job distribution service to Google Base, Simply Hired, Indeed, Oodle, Vast and Edgeio. Thanks for saving recruiters all that time. The premium tech package distributes postings to an additional 12 sites including Slashdot, Gizmodo, Linux.com and Lifehacker, and reaches 10 million unique passives each month.

JobThread's EasyPost is aimed at getting jobs in front of passive candidates where they hang out on the Web. "Tech publishers were the first to adopt our new model," says Eric Yoon, JobThread CEO, "and we intend on expanding our posting network to niche publishers in other communities such as business management, sales, and marketing and healthcare."

Not only does EasyPost distribute jobs to leading online publications, it also makes the posting process easy. Other job distribution services require page after page of data entry, but because of JobThread's unique relationships with publishers, the multi-posting process could not be easier.

pipl

WEB SITE:
www.pipl.com
PRICE: Free
GREAT FOR: Building candidate profiles

Free people search engines are springing up all over the Web (e.g., Wink, Spock). General Web search engines, like Google, search the indexed Web where Pipl (pronounced people) searches registration required and dynamic Web sites that are invisible to traditional search engines (aka, the Deep Web).

Pipl can help recruiters warm up cold calls by providing profile information on prospective candidates and clients. Enter any name at pipl.com to receive contact details, public records, publications, articles and Web page references. Pipl searches thousands of sites in real time including social networks, directories, public databases and database-driven Web sites, including MySpace, Friendster, ZoomInfo, Jigsaw, Flickr, Yelp, Google and Yahoo. New data sources are being added all the time.

Call-Em-All

WEB SITE:
www.call-em-all.com
PRICE: Starting at 9c per call for 1,000 calls
GREAT FOR: Quickly filling job orders

Call-Em-All allows recruiters to quickly and easily record and send out broadcast voice messages. Within minutes users can set up a new account online using a credit card. Larger clients are able to establish corporate accounts with summarized reports, consolidated billing and branch bill-back capabilities.

The recorded message is sent to selected contacts or to an uploaded call list. Once the call is launched, the recruiter can monitor results in real time. Message recipients can listen to the call or voicemail and reply to the message, using their phone keypad, expressing interest, declining the opportunity, requesting not to be called in the future or sharing a referral.

Call-Em-All Founder and President Brad Herrmann explain that, "Most of our recruiter customers use Call-Em-All to quickly distribute job opportunities, especially when they are racing to fill large orders. I really like the creative uses of the tool, though, like using it for timesheet reminders, missing timesheet alerts and wake-up calls. One of our more creative clients used it to remind all employees to update their addresses before W-2s were sent out. It seems that once our clients get started with the tool, they find all sorts of great uses for it."

InstaStaff

WEB SITE:
www.instastaff.com
PRICE: Varies according to usage, starting at $100 per month
GREAT FOR: Quickly filling job orders

InstaStaff enables recruiters to distribute job openings to an unlimited number of candidates by telephone, voicemail, email, text message, instant message and fax. Candidates can respond to the message directly, letting the recruiter know if they are available, need more information, have a referral, are available soon or are not interested.

Contact information is uploaded into the InstaStaff Web application. Each custom voice message can be easily recorded via PC or though a telephone and the text messages are typed directly into the Web interface. InstaStaff sends the message to each contact starting with phone numbers, and works its way through all the available contact methods until the potential candidate confirms the message has been received.

The value proposition of InstaStaff is clear: Recruiters end up spending their time talking with interested candidates rather than answering machines.

"Without InstaStaff, only one out of 10 recruiter phone calls is actually made to a candidate that is interested and available for the job opening," says Patrick Stuver, EVP of InstaStaff. "It costs about two dollars for each live phone call, no matter what the outcome. InstaStaff specializes in working with staffing companies with 10 or more locations so we really understand the industry and its unique needs." InstaStaff enables staffing companies to fill jobs faster with lower overhead costs by ensuring that recruiters are spending their time talking to qualified, available candidates.

Herman Trend Alert: China’s Future Labor Market December 19, 2007

Over the past decade, China's annual GDP increase has been nearly ten percent and for 2007, that growth is nearly 12 percent. We have watched this growth with interest and concern. China’s striking rise to prominence is evident in many ways. Few expect that Chinese economic growth will slow substantially anytime soon.

Many of the developed countries have felt significant losses as the Chinese economy has prospered. However thanks to the Adecco Institute White Paper, published this month, we have a better understanding of China’s situation.

China is not without its own list of major challenges: a significant and growing shortage of skilled workers, "massive economic transition, increasingly unequal income distribution, high unemployment, economic imbalance such as rising inflation, and a fast-aging workforce" (
http://www.hermangroup.com/alert/archive_12-3-2003.html) are already beginning to have a detrimental effect on its national labor market. Moreover, as time passes, these challenges, if not addressed appropriately, will limit economic growth.

Back in 2005 (
http://www.hermangroup.com/alert/archive_11-30-2005.html), we began covering China's labor shortage. "Of all China’s worries, there is little doubt that the growing shortage of skilled workers---leading to severe recruitment and retention problems---is one of the most pressing." It is surely at the top of foreign and local business interests. Certainly, the continuity of economic growth in China, and the sourcing of products there by foreign and national firms, will depend on the ability of Chinese firms to recruit and retain skilled workers, as well as their making productivity improvements. (http://www.hermangroup.com/alert/archive_6-20-2007.html)

"China is (currently) at full employment for skilled, technical, and managerial talent." In research conducted for the Adecco Institute, the Shanghai Academy of Social Science found that China's labor market faces 5 to 10 year supply constraints in five key areas of skilled labor: "management talent, English language skills, Research & Development personnel, senior and secondary technically skilled workers, and holders of professional certificates".

China's continued growth will depend on employers' addressing these critical issues.

Just In: NO MORE EXCUSES ...

“This year, I’m going to follow through on my promises to myself.”

You know what you need to do … you know what you’re supposed to do ... you know what you want to do in order to achieve your goals. So what is it that’s keeping you from doing it? The answer is self-discipline, and here’s a little-known secret: Becoming self-disciplined is incredibly easy! Every high-achieving person has done it, and so can you. It all comes down to a few simple techniques. Install them in your mind, and in no time you’ll be getting the things you want without even trying!

NO MORE EXCUSES!

Dear George Vasu,

That’s right, I’m talking to you.

2008 is almost here. Another year, come and gone. Are you where you want to be — where you dreamed you’d be, one, five, ten years ago? Do you have the money you want? The job you want? The body you want? The relationships you want?
In other words, do you have the life you want?

If your answer is no, I can tell you exactly why you don’t:

Your excuses are keeping you from getting it!

“I don’t have the time …”
“I don’t have the money …”
“It’s too hard …”
“I’m too busy …”
“I can’t help it …”
“Nothing ever works for me …”

Sound familiar?

If these are the kinds of thoughts that run through your head when you’re confronted with the things you want but don’t have, then you’ve got the same problem millions of average people leading average lives have. You let your excuses talk you out of your dreams and your goals.

But there IS a solution. And it ISN’T what you think.

All of your excuses actually boil down to just one critical missing element.

Those who possess this element achieve every goal they set and get everything they want, and it isn’t at all hard for them. Those who don’t … don’t.
Most people think this element is difficult to acquire and almost impossible to maintain. I’m writing to you today to correct that misunderstanding — and to give you a RISK-FREE opportunity to discover just how SHOCKINGLY EASY it can be to eliminate your excuses and start getting what you want.

What I’m talking about is self-discipline. That’s right, self-discipline is the key to success of any kind. When you have the power to actually DO the things you need to do and say you’re going to do in order to get what you want, you are truly an unstoppable force for achievement. It’s the ultimate secret of all the people out there right now getting what they want.

But here’s the real secret:

Self-discipline is incredibly easy to achieve! In fact, by implementing the simple, scientific techniques you’ll discover in The Science of Self-Discipline, you can literally program your mind for AUTOMATIC self-discipline.

That’s right! The techniques and strategies you’ll discover in The Science of Self-Discipline will make it so that you are always doing the things that will get you the results you want. Without pain. Without struggle. Without deprivation. Without ANY of the negatives you might think self-discipline is all about.

You’ve got a self-discipline problem. You know it. Stop making excuses, and click on the link below to order The Science of Self-Discipline today. When you master self-discipline, you will change your life forever — GUARANTEED. And you won’t believe how EASY mastering self-discipline can be.

I urge you to take this vital step to finally put your excuses in check and have the life you’ve always wanted.

Sincerely,

Vic Conant

Herman Trend Alert: 2008 Workforce/Workplace Forecast December 12, 2007

Herman Trend Alert: 2008 Workforce/Workplace Forecast December 12, 2007

Each year at this time, The Herman Group issues its annual forecast. Typically, we have offered an abbreviated version to conform to our one-page per Herman Trend Alert format. This year, once more, we offer you our full forecast for the coming year:

1. Recruitment in a Tightening Labor Market Even the coming economic slowdown will not completely stop the creation of jobs. Moreover, stimulated by job creation and the fact that skilled workers in many occupations are in short supply, time-to-fill openings will also continue to increase as will the costs.

2. More Employers Turning to Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO) In an effort to reduce costs, more large employers will turn to companies like The Right Thing, Inc. and others will step in to provide a wide variety of recruitment services on an outsourced or insourced basis, including providing customized services for clients, based on specific needs.

3. Retention in the Face of Increasing Choices for Employees Recent studies reflect that employee turnover is accelerating. With increasing choices we will see more attrition, especially from the ranks of long-term employees. Wise employers will conduct "stay interviews" and provide re-orientation to their seasoned employees. More employers will begin to be aware of the value of contingent employees and address the issues of retaining them.

4. More Employers will focus on Metrics Following the lead of large employers, more medium-size employers will embrace technology to manage the employee life-cycle and operate more efficiently. This increased efficiency will drive more profit to the bottom line.

5. Leadership Deficit Becomes More Apparent As companies experience the re-careering of Baby Boomer executives, they will become more aware of the lack of qualified supervisors and managers to move up into higher positions. The organizations' previous lack of training for would-be leaders is to blame.

6. Lack of Succession Preparation
Organizations will become more acutely aware of their lack of succession preparation. They have simply not invested in leadership training so that their supervisors, managers, and executives are not ready to move into the positions.

7. More Employers Accommodate Older Workers to Maintain Intellectual Capital The drive to retain older workers will cause companies to work harder to accommodate the wants and needs of older workers. AARP will support employers' drives to hold onto these valuable employees. More employers will embrace flexibility in all aspects of work to adapt to the wants and needs of their retirement-age associates.

8. More Awareness of the Link between Economic- and Workforce Development Workforce development issues move to top-of-mind for communities, as they become more aware of the workforce imperative---that business and industry will only locate where there are the skilled workers to fill their open positions. This awareness will lead organizations to focus more on middle- and high-school students to begin to expose them early to the careers available in their communities.

Speak In These Terms & Demo ....

I have been asked what is the best way to talk about what we do as Associates - when we share our business model with others.

Speak in these terms and demo:

1. We guide the prospective Associate through a tour of the Associate Program
- This is found on the Make Money Pages on the StaffingForce Website

2. We demo the StaffingForce Platform for them
- Log into your Associate and/or Member Portal and show them the platform

If the Prospective Associate is interested in joining the Associate Program activate their account by sending them an invitation to access their own StaffingForce Platform.

- When they do – you get paid a $50 Activation Commissions for each StaffingForce Platform you initiate.

Note:

- We are NOT signing people up – they are
- We are providing an Associate Program (the business model) and the StaffingForce Platform (the technology) to enable them to operate in the Staffing Industry and our ecosystem.

Open Invitation - Make Money In A Multitude Of Ways ...

I wanted to invite you to join my network on StaffingForce.

Temp Help Employment Up 3,000 In Q2 ...

The staffing industry employed nearly three million workers in the second quarter of 2007, about 3,000 more than in the second quarter of 2006, setting a new record high in second quarter employment, according to the American Staffing Association's quarterly survey.

On a quarter-over-quarter basis, staffing employment performed stronger, with 4.8% more workers employed in the second quarter of this year than in the first.

This year's second quarter sales growth reverses a year-long trend of market deceleration, but remains far from the double-digit growth rates of three years ago and was lower than the quarter's 3.4% growth in U.S. Gross Domestic Product as estimated by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, according to ASA.

StaffingForce will be extremely active in the Temp Help segment of the Staffing Industry.

Make Money …

I was asked recently, how easy will it be to feature the Associate Program to others. The answer is – very easy. On the StaffingForce website is a tab call “make money” and once clicked it will unveil the entire program to anyone,

It will include:

- how the program works
- an overview of core technology
- a detailed staffing industry analysis
- a full comparison of the competition
- the requirements for commission generation
- calculators to project earnings
- a demographic recap of ideal associates

We’ll let our website do the work – all we do is share it with others. And those that are interested in joining us - we’ll sponsor.

Easy is the key!

Joining the Associate Program will be really easy!

How? First, another StaffingForce Associate invites you to join, just like you would get invited to join LinkedIn, MySpace, FaceBook or any other social network. Once you become an Associate you’ll access the StaffingForce Platform and have everything you need to start, operate, and prosper in the staffing industry. No experience needed and no more free referrals.

The Secrets of Word-of-Mouth Marketing ....

"Marketing is not something you do to people, it’s something you do for people. Marketing is the service of helping people make the best possible decision."

— George Silverman: Author & viral marketing expert.

The term "marketing" isn’t just for marketers. It’s a part of our everyday lives. We are all marketers on some level; whether we are selling our ideas to our school board, local church or in front of a group at our office, the truth is, virtually every interaction we have has an element of marketing.

The only marketing that works effectively is that which helps people make informed decisions. George Silverman’s audio program The Secrets of Word-of-Mouth Marketing is your fastest direct route to learning and understanding marketing that informs and helps people, whether it is marketing products, services, your ideas, or even yourself.

As we roll out StaffingForce - I’d like our Associates to take on this philosophy, of imparting knowledge, sharing, showing, informing and helping others see what we already see.

It’s not about selling – it’s about sharing!

The job openings rates were highest in professional and business services (4.3%) and accommodations and food services (4.0%).

The hires rate was 3.4% in June, down from 3.6% in May and 3.7% in June 2006, according to the BLS. There were almost 4.8 million hires in June, compared to almost 5.0 million in May and June 2006.

Worker Confidence Improves ...

Worker confidence regained lost ground in July following a drop in June, according to a survey by Hudson, part of the Hudson Highland Group Inc. (NASD: HHGP). The Hudson employment index rose to 105.8 in July from 101.2 in June. The index is also up year-over-year from 101.9 in July 2006.

The percentage of workers saying their finances are improving rose to 43% in July from 39% in June. And the number of workers worried about job security fell to 17% in July from 19% in the prior month. Workers expecting layoffs dropped to 14% from 15%.

"Although workers are facing some financial burden these days with a weak housing market and elevated gas prices, they remain encouraged by the job market's stability," said Robert Morgan, president of Talent Solutions, Hudson. "In many respects June was an anomaly in 2007, as July's index and many of the contributing factors have returned to the levels seen leading up to last month."

Discrimination In Hiring?

According to the "2007 Graduating Student Survey" conducted recently by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), white males had an easier time finding full-time positions upon graduation than female and minority graduates. Although there were no gender- or ethnicity-based differences in the percentage of students actively pursuing full-time positions, those factors did play a big role in which graduates landed jobs following graduation.

More than 56 percent of male graduates applying for jobs had secured full-time positions before they graduated; by comparison, only 48 percent of female graduates who had applied for positions had jobs after graduation.

Overall, 53 percent of white/Caucasian-American graduates who had formally applied for full-time jobs had landed positions compared with 34 percent of African-American graduating applicants, and 43 percent of Hispanic-American graduating applicants. Asian-American graduating applicants tended to land full-time jobs at nearly the same rate (52 percent) as their Caucasian peers.

Do the differences reflect discrimination or something else? Looking at gender differences, NACE's study found that males were more likely than females to leverage the resources of their campus career centers. Consequently, they had more job offers.

Yet, a combination of factors appears to cause the ethnic differences. For example, like females, Hispanic applicants (male and female) used their career centers at a lower rate than white applicants and received fewer jobs.

However, African-American males used their career centers and received job offers at the same rate as white males, but accepted job offers at a lower rate. Asian-American males used the career center and received and accepted jobs offers at the same rates as white males.

These results demonstrate that using campus career centers' resources can mean the difference between having a firm job offer following graduation versus having to continue to search. And we believe these results have clear implications for career centers' outreach as well.

What isn’t detailed are the differences between young people studying business versus liberal arts. Are employers taking advantage of the broad backgrounds of liberal arts graduates or taking the easy way out and hiring those with business backgrounds, thinking that they are better prepared?

Who would make ideal Associates from the recent college grads????

Consumer Confidence At Six-year High ...

The Conference Board consumer confidence index rose to a six-year high in July, going to 112.6 from 105.3 in June.

Consumers claiming conditions are "good" rose to 28.1% in July from 27.3% in June. As far as the job market, those claiming jobs are "plentiful" rose to 30.5% from 27.6% in June. And those saying jobs are "hard to get" fell to 18.4% from 20.5%.

"Looking ahead, consumers are more upbeat about short-term economic prospects, mainly the result of a decline in the number of pessimists, not an increase in the number of optimists," said Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board consumer research center. "This rebound in confidence suggests economic activity may gather a little momentum in the coming months."
The consumer confidence survey is based on a sample of 5,000 U.S. households.

Survey Finds Employment Growth Rebounds ...

Employment growth rebounded in the second quarter of 2007 from the first quarter, according to the National Association for Business Economics' industry survey of its members. The report's net rising index for employment was 18 for the second quarter, up from 11 in the first quarter. Thirty-two percent of survey respondents reported employment growth in the second quarter, while 14% reported falling employment.

Forty-one percent said employment will increase in the next six months, compared to 29% in the first-quarter report.

Also, 42% reported that wages and salaries rose in the second quarter. In addition, 40% reported skilled labor shortages.

"The July NABE industry survey showed a pickup in business activity, profit margins, hiring and capital spending compared to the first quarter," said Ken Simonson, chief economist of Associated General Contractors of America. "Expectations also brightened for the next few quarters for the economy as a whole and for employment and capital spending, especially on structures."

The NABE survey included responses from 109 of the organization's members.
